Kaylene's goal is to become an early childhood teacher because she enjoys helping young children learn, grow, and build confidence. She hopes to return to her hometown to teach and make a positive impact on local students and families. Committed to creating a supportive learning environment where every child feels valued and encouraged to succeed, Kaylene plans to use her education to give back to her community and inspire the next generation of learners. Meet Monica Miller, school social worker at the Northeast BOCES. She has been in the profession for four years and is motivated by advocacy and equity.
For Monica, the most rewarding part of her work is building authentic relationships and earning the trust of students who may not easily trust adults. It's powerful for her to create spaces where students feel emotionally safe, valued, and understood. "Every student deserves a genuine sense of belonging," she says.
Outside of work, she likes spending time with her family and gardening. She also thoroughly enjoys being outdoors in the Colorado sunshine.

Local Leaders Shine at CAGT Conference
Local Northeast Board of Cooperative Educational Services (NE BOCES) gifted education professionals took on major roles at the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented (CAGT) Conference, held October 19–21 at the Embassy Suites in Loveland.
Paula McGuire is the Northeast Gifted Education Regional Consultant (GERC) serving NE BOCES and RE-1 Valley. McGuire is also the current President-Elect of CAGT and she worked closely with a 17-member planning committee and CAGT’s Executive Director and Administrative Assistant to make the event a success.
In addition to organizing and leading the conference, Paula also co-presented a breakout session with another Gifted Education Regional Consultant (GERC) and Dr. Amy Graefe of the University of Northern Colorado titled “Aptitude Tests: Different Minds, Different Measures.” The session explored how different ability and intelligence assessments can best serve diverse student needs.
Christine Daugherty, NE BOCES’ Gifted and Talented Coordinator and a member of the Conference Planning Committee, organized and launched a new social event - Game Night - which was well attended and enthusiastically received. She also participated in the new Table Top Teachings series, where she presented “System Tools that Measure, Track, and Empower Change.” Her session, featuring her innovative Master GT Sheet for goal tracking, progress monitoring, and communication, drew full tables during each rotation.
Adding to the conference celebrations, Megan Wolf, NE BOCES School Psychologist and Special Education Coordinator, was recognized as one of two recipients of a competitive CAGT scholarship. Her selection reflected both her commitment to gifted education and the strength of the local community’s involvement in statewide efforts.
Local GT Coordinators from Northeast BOCES schools were also present and participated in the conference, including Leslie Raffelson from Peetz Schools, Jessi Stumpf from Merino Schools, TC Travis from Wray Schools, Jose Ramon Rivera from Yuma Schools, and Denise Dutton from Destinations K-12 online.
This year’s CAGT Conference highlighted the ongoing dedication of NE BOCES and Districts’ gifted and talented departments and their ongoing commitment to advancing opportunities for gifted learners across Colorado.
